Florence Beatrice Price, 1887-1953, United States
Florence Beatrice Price was a pianist and organist and a prolific composer of over 300 works, including symphonies, concertos, a piano sonata, piano quintet and string quartets, as well as character pieces and art songs. She made history on June 15, 1933 when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed the world premiere of her Symphony No. 1 in E Minor. It was the first time a symphony written by an African-American woman was performed by a major American orchestra.
